Cracked Alloy Wheel Repair Cost: What Affects the Price

Cracked alloy wheel repair at Vantom costs £96 per crack. Every wheel is inspected first, then repairable cracks are TIG welded and pressure tested at our Congleton workshop. Here's what the price covers, what affects the final cost, and when a crack means the wheel should be replaced instead.

What's included in the £96

  • Inspection first. We check where the crack is, how long it is and whether the wheel has been repaired before. Not every crack is safe to repair.
  • TIG welding. The crack is prepared and welded, a method that gives fine control of the heat on aluminium.
  • Pressure testing. The repaired wheel is tested to make sure it holds air before it goes back on.

What affects the cracked alloy wheel repair cost

How many cracks there are

Pricing is per crack, so two repairable cracks on one wheel are £192. A wheel with several cracks may also be a sign it's no longer worth saving.

Where the crack is

Location matters more than size. Cracks in the barrel, the wide section the tyre sits on, can often be repaired. Cracks in the spokes or around the hub carry the car's weight and braking loads, and usually mean the wheel should be replaced.

Losing air or spotted a crack? Don't keep topping it up. We inspect and repair cracked wheels at our Congleton workshop for £96 per crack. Book an alloy wheel crack repair or call 0330 133 8719.

Whether you want the wheel refinished

A weld leaves a repaired area that no longer matches the rest of the finish. On the inner barrel that may not matter to you, but if the repair is visible, or the wheel is kerbed or corroded too, you can have it refinished. Powder coated alloy wheel refurbishment is £90 per wheel and diamond cut repair £144 per wheel.

Other damage from the same impact

A hit hard enough to crack a wheel can also buckle it. Buckle repair is £96 per wheel. If the tyre has a bulge or cut, it will need replacing too.

When we'll advise replacement

We won't repair a crack we don't believe is safe. We'll usually recommend a new wheel when:

  • the crack is in a spoke or around the hub
  • the crack is long or spreading in several directions
  • the wheel has been welded before in the same area
  • there are several cracks, or other serious damage

That costs more than a repair, but safety comes first. New wheel prices vary a lot by car, so ask your dealer for a quote for the exact wheel.

Signs your wheel may be cracked

  • a slow puncture that keeps coming back with no nail or screw in the tyre
  • a tyre pressure warning that returns after topping up
  • a fine line on the inner barrel, often near where a pothole or kerb was hit
  • new vibration after an impact

Many cracks are on the inside of the wheel, so you won't see them from outside. Read more about our while-you-wait crack repair.

Quick answers

Is a welded alloy wheel safe?

When the crack is in a repairable area, properly welded and pressure tested, yes. That's why we inspect first and turn down repairs we don't think are safe.

Can I keep driving on a cracked wheel?

It isn't a good idea. Cracks can grow with every revolution and the tyre can lose air quickly. If it's losing pressure fast, use the spare and get it checked.
