Alloy wheel powder coating at our Congleton workshop costs £90 per wheel or £360 for four, any size up to 23", with next-day turnaround as standard. Every wheel is stripped to bare metal, repaired, sandblasted and coated in a three-stage primer, colour and lacquer powder system, then oven cured, refitted and balanced. Powder coated refurbishments carry a 12-month warranty (subject to terms).
Powder coating is the finish we use on every alloy wheel refurbishment, because done properly it is harder, more even and longer lasting than wet paint. This page explains what it is, how we do it, what it costs and when it is the right choice for your wheels.
What is alloy wheel powder coating?
Powder coating is a dry finish. Instead of spraying liquid paint, we apply an electrostatically charged powder to the bare, earthed wheel. The charge pulls the powder evenly around spokes, edges and the inside of the barrel. The wheel then goes into an oven, where the powder melts and cures into a single hard, continuous skin. Because there is no solvent to evaporate, there are no runs, no thin edges and no soft paint waiting to chip.
We lay it on in three stages: a primer for adhesion and corrosion protection, the colour coat, and a clear powder lacquer for gloss and UV protection. Each stage is cured before the next.
Our powder coating process
Seven steps, all in-house. These photos are from real jobs at our Congleton workshop.

1. Wheels and tyres off
The wheels come off your car and the tyres come off the wheels. Nothing is masked or coated around rubber.

2. Inspect
With the tyre off we check for buckles, cracks and corrosion. Anything structural is quoted and fixed before coating, never hidden under it.

3. Strip to bare metal
The wheel is chemically stripped so the old paint, lacquer and corrosion are gone completely.

4. Repair
Kerb damage is reshaped and smoothed. Deep gouges are built back up with face welding (£36 extra).

5. Sandblast
Blasting cleans the aluminium and gives the primer a surface to key into.

6. Primer, colour and lacquer
Three powder coats, each oven cured, for a hard, chip-resistant finish.

7. Refit and balance
Tyres back on, wheels balanced and refitted to your car.

Colours and finishes
Standard colours are included in the price, in gloss or satin at no extra cost. Most customers choose an OEM-style silver, grey, gunmetal or black, either matching the original finish or going darker for a sharper look. Special colours outside our standard range are £72 extra per job, and shadow chrome, chrome and candy finishes are £72 extra per wheel. See real examples on our alloy wheel colours and finishes page.
If you have a colour in mind, send us a photo or a paint code and we'll tell you what it would look like in powder before you book.
Powder coating vs wet paint
-
Durability. A cured powder film is thicker and harder than a sprayed paint film, so it resists stone chips, kerb scuffs and brake dust better.
-
Coverage. The electrostatic charge wraps the powder around spokes and into the barrel evenly. Wet paint tends to go thin on edges, which is where corrosion starts.
-
Corrosion. Powder primer over sandblasted bare metal seals the aluminium against road salt and water, the two things that lift lacquer on a wheel.
-
Finish. No runs, no overspray, no dust in the lacquer. Gloss is deep and even; satin is uniform across the whole set.
The one job powder can't do is a diamond cut face. If your wheels have a bright machined face, see diamond cut alloy repair, where the wheel is powder coated first and then cut on our CNC lathe.
When powder coating isn't the answer
Powder coating suits most alloy wheels, but we inspect every one first. If a wheel is cracked in a spoke or around the hub, badly bent, or corroded so deeply that it is no longer safe, we'll tell you and advise replacement rather than coat over a problem. If you want the bright machined look back, that's diamond cutting, not powder.

Powder coating questions
How much does it cost to powder coat alloy wheels?
£90 per wheel or £360 for four at our Congleton workshop, any size up to 23", including VAT, tyre removal, refitting and balancing.
How long does powder coating last on alloy wheels?
With the wheel stripped to bare metal and blasted first, a powder coated finish should outlast the original factory paint on most cars. Ours carries a 12-month warranty (subject to terms), and regular washing to keep brake dust and salt off will help it last for years.
Is powder coating better than painting alloy wheels?
For durability, yes. Powder cures into a harder, thicker, more even film than sprayed paint and resists chips and corrosion better. Wet paint is only the better choice for a few finishes that can't be done in powder.
Can diamond cut wheels be powder coated?
Yes. Every diamond cut wheel we do is powder coated first, then the face is machined and lacquered. If a wheel has been cut too many times, a full powder coated finish in a matching colour is the alternative.
Can you powder coat one wheel to match the others?
Yes. We match the colour and gloss level to your other three as closely as possible, and we'll tell you honestly if the others are tired enough that a full set makes more sense.
How long does it take?
Next-day turnaround is standard. Same-day powder coating is £72 extra if arranged in advance.
