Mobile or Workshop Alloy Wheel Repair? A Guide for Stoke-on-Trent Drivers

Mobile or Workshop Alloy Wheel Repair? A Guide for Stoke-on-Trent Drivers

If you're in Stoke-on-Trent and your wheels are kerbed, corroded, cracked or buckled, you've got two broad choices: a mobile repair at your home or work, or a full refurbishment in a workshop. Both have their place, and the right one depends on the damage and how long you want the finish to last.

Vantom is an alloy wheel specialist based in Congleton, a short drive from Stoke-on-Trent (see our alloy wheel repair and refurbishment in Stoke-on-Trent page for prices and how to book). We carry out full workshop refurbishments, diamond cutting, crack repairs and buckle repairs in-house, and from 26 October 2026 we also offer mobile crack and buckle repairs across Cheshire and Staffordshire. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose.

What is mobile alloy wheel repair?

Mobile cosmetic repair, often called "smart repair", is carried out at your home or workplace. The technician usually leaves the tyre on, sands and fills the damaged area, then sprays and blends paint over that section of the wheel.

When mobile repair makes sense

  • Light kerb scuffs on a painted (not diamond cut) wheel
  • When convenience matters more than the longest-lasting finish
  • A quick tidy-up of one wheel where the rest are in good condition

Its limitations

  • Tyres usually stay on, so the rim edge, bead area and inner barrel can't be properly treated or inspected.
  • It's a localised repair. Corrosion that has spread under the surrounding paint isn't removed, so it can come back.
  • Wet paint, not powder coat. Mobile repairs use wet paint, which is generally less chip-resistant than an oven-cured powder coat.
  • Diamond cut wheels can't be properly restored by painting. Their face needs machining on a lathe.
  • Colour and finish matching can be harder outside a controlled environment.

What happens in a workshop refurbishment?

A full refurbishment treats the whole wheel, not just the damaged patch:

  1. Wheels removed and inspected, including for hidden cracks and buckles
  2. Tyres removed from every wheel
  3. Wheels acid dipped back to bare metal to remove old coatings and corrosion
  4. Kerb damage repaired, with deeper damage welded
  5. Wheels sandblasted clean
  6. Three-stage powder coating: primer, colour and lacquer, each cured in an oven
  7. Diamond cutting on a CNC lathe, if chosen
  8. Tyres refitted and every wheel balanced

Because the tyres come off, we can also spot and deal with cracks or buckles that a cosmetic repair would miss.

Which should you choose?

  • One light scuff on a painted wheel: a mobile repair may be enough, as long as you know its limits.
  • Several kerbed wheels, bubbling corrosion or peeling paint: a workshop refurbishment is the lasting fix.
  • Diamond cut wheels: these need re-machining in a workshop.
  • Changing colour: workshop only.
  • Vibration after a pothole: the wheel may be buckled. See below.

Buckled or cracked wheel in Stoke-on-Trent?

Potholes are a common cause of buckled and cracked wheels. Signs include steering vibration, a tyre that keeps losing pressure, or a pressure warning that won't go away. Read our guide on how to tell if your alloy wheel is buckled.

  • At our workshop: buckle repair is £96 per wheel and many are done while you wait. Repairable cracks are TIG welded and pressure tested for £96 per crack.
  • Mobile crack and buckle repair: from 26 October 2026, we can come to you and straighten or weld suitable wheels on site for £96 per repair, plus a £60 call-out (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6:30pm) or £120 out of hours and at weekends. The call-out is charged once per visit. Our mobile service covers areas including Newcastle-under-Lyme and Kidsgrove. Send us your Stoke-on-Trent postcode to check availability. Mobile work has to be done in a safe place, never at the roadside on a motorway.

Not every wheel can be safely repaired. If a crack is in a spoke or near the hub, or the wheel is too badly damaged, we'll tell you honestly and advise replacement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does alloy wheel refurbishment cost for Stoke-on-Trent drivers?

At Vantom, powder coated refurbishment is £90 per wheel (£360 for four) and diamond cut refurbishment is £144 per wheel (£576 for four). Crack and buckle repairs are £96 each.

Do you do mobile alloy wheel refurbishment in Stoke-on-Trent?

Our cosmetic refurbishments are done in our Congleton workshop, because stripping, powder coating and diamond cutting need workshop equipment. From 26 October 2026, we do offer mobile crack and buckle repair across Cheshire and Staffordshire, from £96 per repair plus a £60 weekday call-out. Send us your postcode to check.

How long does it take?

Next-day turnaround is standard.

Is mobile repair as good as a workshop refurbishment?

For a small scuff on a painted wheel, a good mobile repair can look fine. For corrosion, multiple damaged wheels, diamond cut wheels or colour changes, a workshop refurbishment lasts longer because the whole wheel is stripped and refinished.

Do you offer a warranty?

Yes. Our refurbishments come with a 12-month warranty, subject to terms.
